平安時代に文徳天皇の第一皇子であった惟喬親王が（844年〜897年）、京都嵐山・法輪寺で虚空蔵菩薩から漆の製法と漆塗りの技法を伝授され、日本国中に広めたとされています。その参籠満願の日が11月13日。日本精漆工業協同組合と全国漆業連合会はこの日を「うるしの日」と制定し、漆業関係者は毎年お詣りして、業界の発展と技術向上を祈願しています。

法輪寺では、毎年この日に「うるしの日法要」を開催しています。一般の方でも参加でき、今年も例年通り開催されます。また狂言の披露もありますので、是非足を運んでみて下さい。

It is said that Prince Korekata (844–897), the first son of Emperor Montoku during the Heian period, was instructed in the method of manufacturing lacquer and the technique of lacquering by Kokuzo Bosatsu (Akasagarbha Bodhisattva) while secluded at Hōrin-ji Temple in Arashiyama, Kyoto. He then spread this knowledge throughout Japan.

The day his seclusion pilgrimage was completed (Mangan no Hi) is November 13th. In commemoration of this, the Japan Seishitsu Industrial Cooperative Association and the Japan Lacquerware Association have designated this day as "Urushi no Hi" (Lacquer Day). Every year, people in the lacquer industry visit the temple to pray for the development and technical improvement of their craft.

Hōrin-ji Temple holds the "Urushi no Hi Hōyō" (Lacquer Day Memorial Service) on this day annually. The general public is welcome to attend, and the event will be held as usual this year. There will also be a Kyōgen (traditional comic theater) performance, so please come and visit!
